Colonel Steven C. McCraw Retires After 15 Years as Texas DPS Director

Colonel Steven C. McCraw, the Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), said goodbye to staff today as he left DPS Headquarters in Austin for the last time after 15 years of service.

According to Governor Greg Abbott, Director Steve McCraw has led the Texas Department of Public Safety for the past 15 years with honesty and commitment. I appreciate his outstanding service to the state and his unwavering commitment to the rule of law. Generations to come will carry on his legacy.

McCraw’s leadership was commended by State Senator Juan Chuy Hinojosa, who described him as an effective administrator, a tenacious leader, and a fervent supporter of the agency. DPS became a great law enforcement agency thanks to McCraw’s creative leadership, according to Public Safety Commission Chairman Steven P. Mach.

Significant improvements were made to DPS under McCraw’s tenure, such as a shift to a regional command structure, greater officer compensation, modern equipment, and stricter hiring guidelines. During his tenure as Director, the DPS Training Academy graduated over 3,000 cadets.

As a DPS Trooper, McCraw started his law enforcement career in 1977. Before being appointed DPS Director in 2009, he served as Texas Homeland Security Director and as an FBI Special Agent.

“The greatest honor of my life has been serving as the Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety,” McCraw remarked. I depart with the knowledge that this department is in the finest possible hands for its future.

DPS employees paid tribute to McCraw with a series of videos called “Honoring a Lifetime of Service.”Following a formal farewell earlier this week, when he left the site with planes flying overhead and staff from every division lining the drive.
