For the fourth week in a row, Bo Nix is unlikely to win Offensive Rookie of the Week, but he is prepared to exchange that honor for a victory.
Although Nix didn’t have a particularly outstanding game, he did create a remarkable play during Monday night’s Denver Broncos’ 41-32 victory over the Cleveland Browns.
After three weeks in a row of impressive performances that earned him the league’s Offensive Rookie of the Week award, the rookie quarterback returned to earth against the Browns.
With 18 of 35 passes completed, Nix gained 294 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Nix hadn’t thrown two interceptions in a game since Week 2, and the picks were the first time he had done so in four games. Nevertheless, the Broncos (8-5) prevailed, maintaining their position as the AFC’s seventh seed as they continue to push for a postseason berth.
Despite letting Cleveland quarterback Jameis Winston throw for 497 yards and four touchdowns during the game, the Broncos prevailed. But the Broncos returned two picks for touchdowns and intercepted Winston three times. Additionally, the Broncos lost 28–17 before coming back to win.
How it occurs is irrelevant. After the game, Nix told reporters, “We just make the next play.” Don’t get down, and keep going. We have to find a method to score when we are behind by a point, and we succeeded. After then, our defense [said], We must figure out how to stop them, and they succeeded. Only a whole team effort. It was pleasing to observe.
Nix will never forget his lone touchdown pass.
On a third-and-11 play from their own 7, Nix threw arguably his most impressive pass of the season, a thread-the-needle dime to wide receiver Marvin Mims at the 45. The ball just got past a diving effort by Cleveland safety Denzel Ward and Mims easily sprinted into the end zone for a 93-yard touchdown.

We were attempting to attack and take the first down. Marvin, with his speed, I just had to get it out there. He did a great job of splitting the field and their guy couldn t get to it, Nix said. I just kind of heard the crowd go crazy. It s one of those awesome plays that you don t get very often, but it was pretty fun.
What s really fun for the Broncos is they control their destiny as they attempt to earn a playoff berth for the first time since the 2015 season. There were few – if any – preseason predictions of the Broncos being in this position at this point in the season. As the Broncos enter their bye week, Nix said the team is growing more confident.
We re a confident bunch right now, Nix told reporters. We re playing aggressively. We re playing together. We re playing with a little bit of confidence and a chip on our shoulder. [We are] just trying to continue to prove not only to other people but to ourselves that we have a really good football team. We re starting to play like it. Playing with that confidence is important. It s good to see us win in games like this.
