A gathering will take place on Sunday evening to commemorate the life of Big Pokey, a renowned rap artist from Houston who passed away last week.
Big Pokey tragically died on June 18 in Beaumont, Texas, after collapsing while performing at a bar. He had been scheduled to make a special guest appearance at the Pour09 Bar & Rooftop for a Juneteenth celebration. On that same day, he performed in front of fans in Baytown, Texas.
Since his passing, there has been an overwhelming show of support for the esteemed member of The Screwed Up Click.
The Community Celebration honoring Big Pokey, whose real name was Milton Powell, will be held at 6 p.m. on the grounds of Houston City Hall, located at 901 Bagby St.
“We appreciate your patience during this challenging time. Due to the tremendous response, Big Pokey’s family has partnered with the City of Houston to organize today’s event,” stated an email regarding the gathering.
Representatives from Big Pokey’s team have informed ABC13 that the event is open to all ages and does not require an entry fee.
The family has announced that food trucks will be present, and a special presentation will pay tribute to the life of one of the most influential figures in the Houston rap community.
