California man saved family from fire, then died trying to find engagement ring in burning home

After saving his family on Christmas morning by waking them up to a fire in their house, a 37-year-old Oakland man passed away after returning inside and losing consciousness while looking for an engagement ring.

According to family members, Steven Weatherford will pop the question to his fiancée on New Year’s Eve of next week, according to KRON.

Authorities say that at approximately 6:15 a.m., the Oakland Fire Department was called to a house fire in the 3500 block of Oak Knoll Boulevard.

Weatherford alerted his father, brother, and aunt to the fire before anyone else did.

His fiancée Lashante Mayo informed the news station that although he assisted in getting everyone to escape, he entered the house to take an engagement ring out of a safe.

She claimed that he was the best person you could ever be. He cherished everyone, including his friends and family. In an attempt to get them out of the house, he died. He is the sweetest person you will ever meet, incredibly hilarious, and gorgeous.

When Weatherford lost consciousness, authorities think the smoke probably confused him.

The cause of the fire is still being looked into.
