Elijah Molden’s incredible 2024 season has ended suddenly.
The Los Angeles Chargers defeated the New England Patriots 40-7 on Saturday, but the defensive back allegedly sustained a season-ending broken fibula. With the team, the Chargers secured a postseason berth.
Molden suffered a non-contact injury to his left leg late in the third quarter, which means he will not be able to participate in the postseason. The leg injury forced the former West Linn High School standout, who had a right knee issue going into the game, to leave the field. The Chargers did not specify the nature of Molden’s injury when they declared he would not be playing again.
Fox Sports Jordan Schulz stated that Molden had a fractured fibula, but the Chargers had not verified the information. Molden will miss the remainder of the 2024 season if additional testing reveals the injury.
Molden was having a fantastic season in his debut season with the Chargers, so the loss is a devastating blow. Days before the regular season started, the cornerback, who had joined the Chargers via a trade with the Tennessee Titans, moved to safety to make room for Derwin James to play in the nickel. In 15 games in 2024, Molden set career highs with three interceptions, seven passes defended, two fumble recoveries, and 75 total tackles.
Molden, 25, will have more marketability due to his numbers when he becomes a free agency in the offseason.
