Greetings, Miss Manners When organizing a mid-to-large party, how should I best ask visitors to inform me of any accommodations they might require? Examples could include mobility issues or dietary restrictions, and the setting is a laid-back gathering where people bring food to share. We use internet tools for the majority of our party preparation and conversation.
I would want to see a script that will encourage individuals to speak up without feeling pressured to do so. I want them to understand that we are pleased to help and that it won’t be a burden in any manner. Striking a balance is difficult.

Miss Manners: Grumpy host is put out when guests don’t offer to help in the kitchen
GENTLE READER: Please pardon Miss Manners if she has become pessimistic about guests’ reluctance to express their wants and preferences. She is accustomed to hearing from irritated and overworked hosts who receive so many requests of this nature that they are unable to handle them all.
It’s encouraging that you are genuinely seeking this knowledge and willing to make accommodations.
It’s doubtful that visitors won’t cater to their own dietary demands because this is already a laid-back gathering where they are asked to bring their own food. However, Miss Manners offers various forms of accommodations. We hope to see you soon. If you have any unique requirements, do let us know.
