Miss Manners: With checks going out of style, can we send Venmo link as a wedding present?

Greetings, Miss Manners When I was growing up, it was common practice to give a personal check enclosed in a greeting card. This worked for both in-person celebrations and when the gift and card were mailed.

The use of personal checks is declining. Personally, I might write two or three pieces a month.

In our community, the majority of wedding presents are envelopes filled with cash or cheques, and my adult daughter recently attended the wedding of a college classmate. My daughter has had a bank account for a number of years, but before this wedding, she didn’t require a checkbook. We decided to have her deposit money into my account, after which I sent the newlyweds the check.

Is it appropriate to use online money transfer services for these kinds of events given the times we live in? Including a Venmo link in a wedding invitation can seem tacky at first, but it would actually be very practical for everyone.

In contrast to a sterile financial transaction on a website called Gimme Dat Money, a real envelope will at least serve as a reminder that a gift was given, even though it is unlikely to prompt a thank-you note.
