Florida’s West Palm Beach. In time for Christmas Eve, Athena arrived home to her family in Florida after a search that lasted over a week. She even rang the doorbell.
After Athena, a 4-year-old German shepherd and husky mix, ran away from her Green Cove Springs, Florida, home on December 15, the neighborhood and neighboring towns began looking for her. According to Brooke Comer, her owner, her family departed for church that day, and she received a message from her neighbor outside the house with a photo of Athena.
Comer went into a panic. When her family arrived home in a hurry, they discovered her collar in the crate with no obvious escape route. It’s still unclear how she got away.
The events of the following week proved to be an astonishing tale for Comer, as locals from neighboring towns would get in touch with her through her missing dog advertising and submit any pictures or videos they might have taken of Athena. Comer received so many alerts that it appeared Athena traveled about 20 miles round-trip during her disappearance.
Within minutes of each alert, Comer and her family would arrive at the location and conduct a fruitless search for Athena.
According to Comer, she was the all-time grand champion at hide-and-seek. My heart leapt at every sighting, and to be honest, it was a moment of excitement, followed by heartbreak because we were always lagging behind.
Comer, who was concerned about where her already cautious dog might have gone or might have come across, found the entire search to be a horrifying and frightening experience. That is, until her other dog started barking at 2:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve after she received a Ring video notification from her doorbell.
The dog started barking, and I was kind of dazed. When I heard it, I looked at my phone, and as you could see in the video, it was Athena with the doorbell ringing and her leaping at the door, Comer said.
Athena rushed inside as soon as Comer opened the door and proceeded to lick her son’s face, who was half asleep on the couch. She then quickly walked to her cage to return to sleep after grabbing her ball to play with.
Because of the neighbors and the vast community searching for Athena for the past week, Comer said the event given her a lot of hope. Athena would next have a thorough examination, flea and tick treatments, and a microchip.
