Drone use during Universal CineSational, the park’s late-night performance, has been banned by Universal Orlando.
The modification follows the events of Saturday, when a falling drone used in a presentation at Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando seriously injured a 7-year-old boy.
The drone portion of CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular has been suspended for the time being, according to a universal statement sent to the media.
This week’s drone shows at the Orlando World Center Marriott have been canceled.
When Universal’s CineSational event launched in June, it had 600 drones. In one scene, the flying units created movie-related forms like a shark from Jaws, the Ghostbusters logo, and King Kong climbing a structure.
In addition to pyrotechnics, projections, synchronized fountains, and a cinematic soundtrack, CineSational is set backstage and above the park’s lagoon.
The performance will not use the drone units and is scheduled to run through December 31 at Universal Studios. Nightly show times range from 9 to 10 p.m.
Drone performances were offered earlier this year at other Central Florida destinations, such as Disney Springs, Legoland Florida, and Gaylord Palms Resort, but none were observed during the holiday season. Drone shows were created for two evenings outside the Orange County Convention Center at the IAAPA Expo last month.
Emergency open heart surgery was performed on the afflicted child. He was hit in the mouth and chest by one of the many drones that fell downtown on Sunday.
The Lake Eola incident is being looked at by the Federal Aviation Administration. It’s unknown what prompted the drones to collide and fall.
