This season, Ohio State:
Ohio State’s devastating loss to Michigan at the end of their 10-2 regular season prevented them from playing in the Big Ten title game. But three weeks later, the Buckeyes bounced back and punched their Rose Bowl ticket by thrashing No. 9 seed Tennessee. When playing at its best, OSU is one of the most talented teams in the nation and a real contender for the national championship.
One of the best quarterbacks this season, Will Howard is accurate, efficient, and surrounded by teammates with exceptional skill. Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson may be the best running back combination in the league. The top college football receiver is Jeremiah Smith. All three levels of a top 10 defense have future NFL players.
Even though Tennessee was unable to capitalize, Oregon have the talent to do so, and Ohio State’s offensive line is hindered by injuries. Over the previous two seasons, no team has outscored the Ducks in both yards and points when playing the Buckeyes. Toe to toe, few have the firepower. UO has already demonstrated that it does.
Impact player: Will Howard, quarterback
Howard has scored 29 touchdowns and thrown nine interceptions, ranking third in the country in accuracy (73.2%) and efficiency (173.5). He can prolong plays with his legs to make the receiving corps even more dangerous, and he has seven running TDs.
Player with an impact: TreVeyon Henderson, RB
In the first encounter with Oregon, Henderson had 10 carries for 87 yards, including a 53-yarder. Because of the shared workload, he hasn’t had a 100-yard game this season, but he is averaging more than seven yards per run.
Quinshon Judkins, RB, is an influential player.
Judkins leads OSU for the season with 839 yards and 10 touchdowns. But only twice in the last eight games has he surpassed 50 yards.
Impact player: Jeremiah Smith, wide receiver
With 63 receptions for 1,037 yards, 12 touchdowns, and a running score, Smith is the nation’s top receiver. Against Oregon, he had one of his four 100-yard performances this season. He is a generational talent that few can contain.
Player with an impact: WR Emeka Egbuka
With 65 catches for 824 yards and nine touchdowns, Egbuka is a dangerous player in his own right. Against the Ducks, he recorded a season-high 10 catches.
DE is an impact player. Sawyer, Jack
With 51 tackles, six sacks, one interception, two pass breakups, and two forced fumbles, the defensive captain leads the team.
Player with an impact: DE JT Tuimoloau
Tuimoloau is one of the Big Ten’s most disruptive defenders, recording 46 tackles (14 for loss), eight sacks, two pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. While playing Tennessee, he recorded two sacks.
Player with an impact: S. Caleb Downs
With 69 tackles (6.5 for loss), an interception, and three pass breakups, Downs is among the nation’s best defensive backs.

Of Ohio State s last 12 losses, dating back to 2017, it has lost the rushing and turnover battles in seven of those games, including twice to Oregon. OSU lost the rushing battle in four of the other losses and the turnover battle in the lone other loss it won the rushing battle.
-
Ohio State is making its fourth College Football Playoff appearance since 2019. No other school has been to four of the last six CFPs.
-
Ohio State is 4-4 all-time in CFP games but has never played a CFP game at the Rose Bowl.
Level of threat (from lowest to highest): 5
It’s all anyone might hope for in a Rose Bowl playoff game. This year’s matchup is unfortunate since it takes place in a quarterfinal when it could easily be a national championship contest. These two squads are probably the best in the nation. Due to the abundance of talent on both sides, the offenses defeated the defenders the first time out and will probably do so again. Compared to the first game, Oregon should have a greater advantage against Ohio State’s offensive line if the injury issues stay the same. However, the Ducks are as evenly matched as any opponent this season.
Early forecast: Ohio State 28, Oregon 31,
Reading before the game:
Turning around Oregon’s journey to the College Football Playoffs
Oregon’s victory over Ohio State is still problematic. Will Howard was enraged at the Buckeye defense.
In the Rose Bowl, Oregon begins as a small underdog against Ohio State.
