Odessa Woman Arrested for Capital Murder in Infant’s Death

After looking into the death of her newborn child, the Odessa Police Department charged 22-year-old Yanira Maria Toirac-Prado with capital murder.

When police arrived at a house in the 2900 block of W. 6th Street on October 9, 2024, they found a dead baby in the bathroom. Prado, who was identified as the mother of the child, was sent to Medical Center Hospital for assessment.

Authorities observed strange circumstances surrounding the death during the inquiry and awaited the results of a full autopsy. The official autopsy results, which were received on December 6, 2024, verified that the baby had been born alive, breathing, and at full term. Asphyxia was identified as the cause of death.

Investigators came to the conclusion that Prado killed the baby on purpose and with knowledge based on the autopsy report and evidence found at the scene. A warrant was obtained for capital murder, and the matter was elevated to a homicide investigation.

Prado was brought to the Ector County Law Enforcement Center after being apprehended without incident. For prosecution, the case will be sent to the district attorney’s office in Ector County. A $1 million bond is being used to hold her.
