Oregon State women wipe out a 12-point deficit, beat Gonzaga in Spokane

Another Oregon State basketball triumph despite a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

The Beavers utilized overtime to defeat Gonzaga 71-67 in Spokane after rallying from a 12-point deficit in the last three minutes of regulation.

Ally Schimel’s three-pointer with 1:42 left in overtime gave the Oregon State women the lead for sure after they had scored the last 12 points of regulation to force overtime.

After falling behind by 12 points in the fourth quarter, OSU’s basketball team triumphed for the second time this week. At the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu on Monday, the men’s team defeated Oakland in overtime after overcoming a 12-point deficit in the last four minutes.

With a season-high 10 three-pointers, Oregon State (5-8, 1-1 WCC) achieved their largest victory of the year. Tiara Bolden finished with 10 points, Kennedie Shuler with 16 points and eight assists, and Kelsey Rees with 21 points and nine rebounds.

All nine of OSU’s points came from three-pointers, thanks to AJ Marotte.

With 2:48 remaining, Shuler made a free throw line jumper to start Oregon State’s comeback from a 61-49 deficit. Rees scored the next six points for the Beavers, including a three-pointer to cut Gonzaga’s lead to 61-57.

With 20 seconds remaining, OSU tied the score at 61-61 with to two free throws apiece from Bolden and Shuler.

Allie Turner’s three-pointer with 2:07 remaining gave the Bulldogs a 67-66 lead, the first time Oregon State fell behind in overtime. Schimel, however, put the Beavers up for good with a three-pointer on OSU’s subsequent possession.

Gonzaga only made two of thirteen attempts in the game’s last eight minutes, as Oregon State defeated the Bulldogs 22–6.

Gonzaga led 6-8, 1-2, with Yvonne Ejim scoring 22 points and Turner scoring 16.

After scoring the final six points of the second quarter, Oregon State had a 31-28 lead at the break. In the third quarter, Gonzaga grabbed charge of the match, scoring the game’s final seven points to take a 51-44 advantage.

In the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs kept increasing their lead. Gonzaga led by 12 points twice, but it wasn’t enough to withstand a tough rally from Oregon State.

Oregon State’s next game is against Portland, an in-state WCC team, at Chiles Center at 6 p.m. Portland defeated Santa Clara 81-54 on Saturday, becoming one of seven undefeated Division I women’s teams at 14-0.
