Pedestrian Fatality in El Paso Results from Crossing Outside Crosswalk

The Special Traffic Investigations team responded to a pedestrian collision in the 5300 block of N. Mesa on November 22, 2024, at around 5:29 p.m. According to preliminary evidence, the pedestrian, 34-year-old Ray James Robert, crossed N. Mesa at a point other than a marked crosswalk while 47-year-old Maria Leonor Cardoza, a resident of West El Paso, was going northwest.

Cardoza hit the person in the road after failing to avoid him. She was unharmed and stayed at the site. Fire medical services took Robert to a nearby hospital.

Investigators were informed by the Medical Examiner’s Office on November 30, 2024, that Robert had passed away due to his injuries from the collision. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of crossing at locations other than crosswalks.

Compared to 75 fatalities at the same time last year, this is El Paso’s 63rd traffic death in 2024.
