According to officials, a person in crisis injured themselves in Portland International Airport’s ticket lobby on Saturday afternoon, triggering an emergency reaction and briefly barring passengers from using some areas of the airport.
Around 2:30 p.m., the Port of Portland Fire Department and Port of Portland Police arrived at the scene of a someone using a knife to damage themself. According to Port of Portland spokesperson Allison Ferr, they attempted to prevent the individual from causing more injury.
As the medical examiner and Port of Portland police looked into the event, a portion of the airport was closed until Sunday morning. Ferr would not confirm whether the person died, although death inquiries are typically the responsibility of the medical examiner.
Ferr reported that no other people were hurt.
The event happened in the afternoon of a hectic weekend of holiday travel. According to the port, between December 19 and January 5, 50,000 passengers would pass through the terminal per day on average.
