Prior to voting in last month’s election, voters who identify as white or reside in other areas of the city were much more likely to be aware of Portland’s new ranked-choice voting system than voters of color or those who reside east of Interstate 205.
For the first time, Portland residents were able to rank up to six candidates for mayor and City Council in order of preference thanks to election reforms, which were at least partially known by 85% of voters.
