The 37-year-old Portland bakery JaCiva’s, which is well-known for its intricate wedding cakes and Swiss chocolates, announced on its Facebook page Friday that it will close when its supplies run out later this year.
The post states, “We regretfully announce that JaCiva’s Bakery will be closing its doors.” We are currently operating as long as supplies last.
Going forward, the bakery will offer chocolates, tortes, and other baked products until they are all gone, either by walk-in or same-day order.
The post says, “What a pleasure it has been serving our Portland community for 37 years.” We will miss sharing in your festivities.
According to a 2013 article in The Oregonian, Jack and Iva Elmer met at Heidi’s Swiss Village in Troutdale, were married, and joined their family (she had four children and he had two from a previous marriage). In 1986, they launched JaCiva’s bakery on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard.
Growing up on a dairy farm in rural Troutdale and learning to bake from his mother’s side, Jack Elmer had already completed graduate school in Minnesota and obtained the title of konditor, or master pastry chef, at a Swiss finishing school. In the past, he operated the Old Bohemian Bakery in downtown Portland and owned Elmer’s Old Fashioned Bakery in Gresham. (Walt Elmer, a co-founder of the Elmer’s restaurant chain, was his uncle.)
Laura Boscole, Elmer’s stepdaughter who took over the management of JaCiva’s just before his death in 2014, informed local news outlets that the company hasn’t fully recovered its once-strong wedding business in the years following the COVID-19 outbreak.
In current economic climate, it’s difficult, Boscole told KOIN News on Friday. Portland has seen numerous changes, and small firms have found it quite challenging. This is a terrible decision that wasn’t made lightly, and crime and vandalism are factors in it.
