Portland Timbers select defender with first-round pick in MLS SuperDraft 2025

To fill a defensive need, the Portland Timbers selected a player in the first round of the 2025 MLS SuperDraft. In Friday’s SuperDraft, the Timbers picked defender Ian Smith from the University of Denver with the fourteenth overall pick.

During the 2024 season, Smith, a redshirt junior, was mostly used at left back for the Pioneers. Smith started 21 of 23 games and recorded two goals and ten assists. In 2024, his ten assists ranked seventh nationally and second on the squad.
