Cheers to some good news! Your post brought back fond memories of my family waiting for the opening line, “And here’s the Cinnamon Bear,” in the kitchen of our North Portland house at dinnertime (How the Cinnamon Bear became a distinctly Portland Christmas tradition, Dec. 13).
That radio show, in collaboration with Lipman’s, hosted a Cinnamon Bear coloring contest in the early 1950s when I was around 9 or 10 years old, and I won! I recall taking the bus downtown by myself while holding a letter. Children did things safely back then. I was led to someone in Lipman’s who didn’t appear to know what to do. She returned with a wood burning set after some scurrying around and conversations with other staff members; it was nothing like the doll, painting supplies, or glittering object I had imagined! I handled the big, clumsy box just once or twice before dragging it home. Even now, the scent of charred wood evokes a certain melancholy, but the recollections of Paddy O’Cinnamon’s escapades only bring back happiness! Thank you for the article, then!
