Readers respond: Merger would have hurt customers, employees

The outcomes of the proposed merger are reversed in Justin Hwang’s letter on the Kroger-Albertsons deal (Blocked merger another hit to working families, Dec. 22). First of all, I have never shopped at Walmart because there aren’t any locations close to me. Safeway, Fred Meyer, and New Seasons are all close to Lloyd Center. The only Amazon-owned store in my area is the Whole Foods location on Sandy Boulevard.

There would be a period of lower prices following the merger of Kroger and Albertsons. But as with so many mergers, prices would probably increase after the dust settled. Employee security would likewise be uncertain.

Regardless of what they say, I think a combination between Albertsons and Kroger will undoubtedly result in weaker employee security and higher pricing.
