NEW YORK CITY — The first heat wave of 2024 is set to bring scorching temperatures to the Northeast, with meteorologists warning residents to brace for extreme heat.
Starting this weekend, temperatures are expected to soar into the high 90s, with heat indices reaching well over 100 degrees as per the sources covered by Yahoo
The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for much of the region, urging people to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities, and seek air-conditioned environments.
“This is the first major heat event of the year, and it’s going to be intense,” said NWS meteorologist John Harris.
Health officials are particularly concerned about vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. “Heat-related illnesses can be deadly. It’s crucial to take precautions,” said Dr. Lisa Adams, a public health expert.
Cities across the Northeast are opening cooling centers and extending pool hours to help residents cope with the heat.
