ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Freddy Granger, a man with a lengthy criminal record, has accepted a plea deal in two separate cases while still waiting for his murder trial to commence.
Granger pleaded guilty to stabbing an MDC guard in October and assaulting a family member with a baton and knife in May 2021.
He is also awaiting trial for a murder-for-hire plot where police allege he was paid to kill Gary Escareno near Candelaria and Juan Tabo in July 2022.
The trial date has not been set, but the court aims to schedule it before the end of the year.
Granger’s criminal history dates back to 1999, with various convictions, including kidnapping, aggravated assault, firearm possession, and drug possession.
In 2014, he was charged with stabbing a woman nine times outside a motel on Central near Tramway, resulting in a five-year sentence followed by supervised probation. He was released in August 2020.
Nine months after his release, Granger faced a domestic violence charge, which he pleaded guilty to recently. The state sought to revoke his probation, and he was sent to a halfway house for treatment.
According to the source, he violated his parole three more times after this incident.
In May 2022, Granger was charged with federal crimes for selling $1,500 worth of firearms to an Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Department agent outside a Walmart at San Mateo and Zuni.

The following month, he was involved in a carjacking in Carlsbad.
Judge Cindy Leos sentenced Granger according to the plea agreement, resulting in a 13.5-year sentence to run concurrently with a 25-year federal sentence for selling guns and ammo to an ATF agent and the Carlsbad carjacking in June 2022.
