ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – In a tragic case of mistaken identity, an 11-year-old boy named Froylan Villegas was fatally shot outside Isotopes Park in September 2023.

This heartbreaking incident shocked the Albuquerque community. Recently, one of the suspects, Daniel Gomez, spoke to the police, shedding light on the events and reactions of those involved.

Gomez is one of three men accused of being involved in the shooting that led to Froylan’s death.

He told detectives that after the shooting, the alleged shooter, Nathen Garley, showed no remorse, even laughing about it. Gomez described his fear and disbelief at Garley’s reaction.

Gomez explained to the officers that Garley appeared unaffected by the incident, saying, “To him, nothing happened.”

This lack of empathy was further illustrated in newly released lapel video footage, which revealed details about the night of the shooting.

During the police interview, Gomez described the moment when Garley allegedly opened fire on the Villegas’ truck, thinking that rival gang members were inside.

Gomez said Garley boasted about the shooting, claiming, “I know I hit all of them in that truck; I was aiming right for that b****.”

According to the source, Gomez’s fear escalated as he realized the gravity of the situation and Garley’s indifference.

He recounted feeling terrified, thinking that if he said something wrong, he could be the next target.

Gomez shared that he received threatening calls warning him not to speak about the incident.
