ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police Department held a news conference on Friday to share new details and video footage of a recent officer-involved shooting that resulted in a suspect’s death.

According to police, the incident began at a Flying J truck stop near Central and 98th. Officers ran the plate of a vehicle that came back as stolen.

When they tried to make a traffic stop, the vehicle fled into an El Mezquite parking lot.

At this point, a man and a woman exited the stolen vehicle, entered a truck parked nearby, and fled again.

The police successfully deployed stop sticks, causing the pair to drive off the road and flee on foot into a nearby drainage tunnel.

The police used drones to locate the suspects and discovered that the man, identified as 42-year-old Dale Meador, was armed with a gun.

According to the source, officers spent about an hour negotiating with the suspects, trying to get them to surrender peacefully.

During the standoff, Meador allegedly put the gun to the woman’s stomach and forced her into the vehicle.

Despite commands to drop the gun, Meador did not comply. Some officers on the scene used less-lethal weapons, while one officer fired his rifle, striking and killing Meador.
