FARMINGTON, Maine (WABI) – We spoke with University of Maine-Farmington Political Science Professor Jim Melcher about the assassination attempt over the weekend. According to the source, Melcher said he feels there will be short-term sympathy for Donald Trump but doesn’t feel it will be enough for him to lock down the election. “I don’t think the election is over by a long shot. The polling doesn’t show it. The strong positive and negative feelings Donald Trump arouses, I think make for what should be a very competitive and close campaign that we’ve never seen any campaign quite like this,” said Melcher. He also said, ”So, you know, in spite of all the shootings we have in this country to have somebody try and sway an election by murdering a candidate is shocking and should be shocking, but I don’t tend to think it will have that much effect on this particular election outcome.”

Melcher said he does not think Biden will leave the race, but he says there is still time before the Democratic Convention. Melcher does feel Trump picking 39-year-old Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate could help because of all the complaints about the age of the nominees.
