Silver City, NM—The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) has arrested former Lieutenant David Neil, marking a significant move in maintaining transparency and accountability within the department.

According to the source, Neil’s arrest follows an investigation into allegations of timecard and overtime fraud.

The investigation started last year when internal audits showed discrepancies in Neil’s timecard submissions and overtime claims. The NMSP launched a thorough inquiry to uncover the extent of the alleged fraud.

Working with the Sixth Judicial District Attorney’s Office, investigators found substantial evidence that Neil had falsified time records and claimed overtime for hours he didn’t work.

“Today is a tough day for the New Mexico State Police, but it highlights our strong commitment to transparency and ethical behavior,” said Troy Weisler, Chief of the New Mexico State Police.

“No one is above the law, and we will continue to uphold the highest standards of accountability.

The actions of this individual do not reflect the values and integrity of our officers who serve their communities with honor every day.”

Chief Weisler initiated an internal investigation immediately upon learning of the serious allegations. Neil was placed on administrative leave on December 7, 2023.

He was eligible for retirement and submitted his paperwork, retiring on January 1, 2024.

On July 23, 2024, David Neil turned himself into New Mexico State Police agents and was arrested without incident.
