AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department (APD) reported that a suspect involved in a jugging incident in east Austin was apprehended just hours after the crime.
According to APD, 22-year-old Christopher Phillips targeted an 80-year-old community member in the area. Phillips allegedly monitored bank customers and followed the victim to the 7300 block of Inspiration Drive.
According to the source, once there, he attacked the elderly man as he tried to enter his home.
Phillips is believed to have stolen the victim’s wallet and damaged his doorbell camera, thinking the elderly man had withdrawn a significant amount of cash.

To prevent becoming a victim of jugging, APD offers the following tips:
- Secure Cash Immediately: After withdrawing cash, place it in a secure bag like a briefcase or purse instead of a small zipper bag or envelope.
- Lock Your Car Doors: Always lock your car doors when you get inside your vehicle.
- Report Suspicious Behavior: If you think you’re being followed by a bank, call 911 or drive to the nearest police or fire station.
- Consult Bank Security: Ask your bank for advice on handling large withdrawals or any safety tips they might offer.
