HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — As the countdown to the November election begins, Texas Democrats have unveiled a new initiative aimed at unseating U.S. Senator Ted Cruz.
The campaign, titled “Texas Offense,” rallies behind former NFL linebacker and attorney, Democratic U.S. Congressman Colin Allred, who is taking on Cruz in the upcoming election.
During a rally at the White Oak Music Hall, Allred confidently declared, “On Nov. 5, I’m going to defeat Ted Cruz.”
The sentiment was echoed by State Senator Carol Alvarado, who added, “In 100 days, we can say adios to Cruz and send him on a one-way flight to Cancun.”
Despite the enthusiasm, recent polls suggest Cruz remains the frontrunner. He has been holding onto his Senate seat for the past 12 years and currently has about $2 million more in campaign funds than Allred.
However, Allred has been outpacing Cruz’s previous challenger, Beto O’Rourke, in fundraising. O’Rourke nearly defeated Cruz in a close race, losing by just three percentage points.
Susan Pollard from Moms Demand Action expressed optimism, stating, “I’m very hopeful that we actually will [defeat Cruz].
I think there’s a lot of excitement.” Key issues driving support for Allred include gun safety, border policy, and women’s reproductive rights.
The rally wasn’t without interruptions. Allred’s remarks were twice disrupted by protesters opposing the war in Gaza.
Earlier this year, Allred diverged from the Texas Democratic Party’s stance by not calling for a ceasefire, instead supporting Israel’s actions with an emphasis on following international law.
As the race heats up, both candidates are working to secure Texas’ U.S. Senate seat. Allred’s supporters at the rally seemed to draw energy from Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ nomination, with some speakers referring to the county as “Kamala ‘Harris’ County.”
However, concerns were voiced about President Biden’s low polling numbers potentially impacting competitive state races.
In a recent interview with ABC13, Cruz criticized Allred, accusing him of being “extremely liberal” and “radical.”
He also pointed out that Allred voted “100 percent with Nancy Pelosi” during his first term in Congress.
