In a shocking incident in Harris County, Texas, a young woman is facing serious charges after she allegedly abandoned her newborn in a dumpster.
The 18-year-old, Everilda Cux-Ajtzalam, reportedly left the baby wrapped in plastic in the trash to save her relationship with her boyfriend.
Cux-Ajtzalam, who works at a food truck in Houston, gave birth behind the truck on Sunday, July 21.
After the delivery, she allegedly placed the newborn, along with the umbilical cord and placenta, into a trash bag and disposed of it in a dumpster.
The baby, who was left tied inside the bag, was found by a passerby who heard the infant’s cries and called 911.
Authorities arrested Cux-Ajtzalam later that week. During questioning, she reportedly claimed she felt she had “no other choice” but to abandon the baby to avoid breaking up with her boyfriend.
This startling detail emerged from an affidavit reviewed by PEOPLE.
Surveillance footage from the area captured the incident, but police have not released more specifics.
Thankfully, the child was discovered and taken to a local hospital, where medical staff provided necessary care.
A judge expressed relief that the baby was found and received medical attention.

Cux-Ajtzalam appeared in court on Friday, where a Harris County magistrate issued a protective order against her.
This order prevents her from coming within 200 feet of the child.
Cux-Ajtzalam has not yet entered a plea. Her lawyer, who was recently assigned to the case, is still reviewing the details.
