A tragic incident in Southeast Albuquerque has claimed a second life. On Wednesday afternoon, a car chase involving a man and the police ended in a fatal crash.

Malaktazadak Kyser, 25, from Albuquerque, faces charges of vehicular homicide, causing great bodily harm, and failure to yield to traffic controls.

He is currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center, and it’s not clear who his attorney is.

According to court records, Kyser had previously pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in November, after shooting at a man near the fairgrounds.

The incident began around 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday. Albuquerque Police Department officers were attempting to talk to people in a vehicle outside a smoke shop on the 7800 block of Central, near Pennsylvania.

According to the source, the vehicle sped away, according to a criminal complaint filed at Metropolitan Court.

APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said officers used Starchase, a GPS tracking device, to follow the fleeing vehicle. A witness reported that the vehicle, driven by Kyser, was traveling north on Española at a high speed.

It ran a stop sign and collided with an SUV heading west on Marquette, near the fairgrounds.

Gallegos mentioned that the crash caused the vehicles to hit a signpost, fire hydrant, and fence at the northwest corner of the intersection.
